Yarn of the Month: Cygnet Chunky Chenille Velvet Yarn

We hoping your enjoying this monthly feature - sharing one of our favourite yarns and perhaps tempting you to try something new!

This month it's all about the utterly gorgeous Cygnet Chunky Chenille Velvet Yarn! The photos on our website do not do this yarn justice (you'll understand when you hold it in your hand for the first time!)

This squishable and velvet-textured yarn is just gorgeous, with its silky-smooth texture and super-soft feel it is a pleasure to work with. There are 12 shades to choose from with some gorgeous deep, jewel-like tones as well as pastel colours perfect for baby projects.

As you might be able to tell, we're a little bit in love with this one...

So here's what you need to know about working with this yarn:

So why do we love this yarn so much?

What's there not to love? This yarn is so soft to the touch and although we say this about all of our yarns, the colours in this selection are just stunning! This chenille yarn is chunky and so quick to knit and crochet with making it perfect for mammoth blankets and cosy winter sweaters. It's also great for oversized amigurumi and plushies.

Top Tips for Chenille Yarn

We love this yarn and it's lovely to work with because it's so soft, but it can be a little tricky if you're not used to working with this type of yarn - but don't worry we've got some top tips to help you overcome any issues you might have so you can enjoy making some of the gorgeous patterns we're going to share with you!

1. Try to feel your stitches instead of seeing them - this will get easier the more you do it as you learn the new yarn/hook tension.

2. If it's your first time using this type of yarn, then start with a lighter colour as it's easier to see and work in a well lit space and always do a swatch first

3. Keep the tension tight - if too loose, it can cause a 'worming' effect where the stitches settle and relax in a way that creates loops

4. Go down a hook size or two when using this type of wool to keep it tight

5. Leave a longer tail to weave in or join the yarn using a knot that will not pull out

This yarn can be a little tricky, but it is so worth the effort for the luscious creations that can be made with it! So let's take a look at some patterns.

Chunky Chenille Yarn Patterns

Child's Honeydew hooded scarf with pockets - This pattern shown in the colour Honeydew gives us Winnie the Pooh vibes(!) but it can be anything you want it too in any colour - imagine this in the snowy 'white' colour, or perhaps the deep 'midnight'. We're sure any child would love this super soft hooded scarf to keep them warm through the winter months no matter what the colour!

Chenille Chunky Cosy Cowl - For the adults, how about this lovely snug cosy cowl? We love how the two colours weave together in this pattern - we can see this working well with some team colours! It takes just 1 ball of each colour to create this wonderful scarf.

Velvet Crochet Scrunchies - If you're somewhat new to this yarn and want a smaller project to ease you in, then why not try these scrunchies. All the rage again, these scrunchies are lovely and soft in your hair and make a lovely quick project to get you started.

Adult Slipper Boots - I love a good slipper boot to keep my feet nice and cosy warm, and I don't think these would disappoint! This is a try as you go pattern so you'll end up with the perfect size slipper for your foot - and if you want to be different you could make 2 different colours (mainly because you won't be able to decide between them!)

Ladder Loops Blanket - We love the effect on this blanket and the soft colours used in the photos (Sorbet/Sky/White/Misty Grey). This is not a beginner project but if you have experience, this is a lovely blanket that would make a fab gift.

Amigurumi Patterns

This wool is super popular for amigurumi patterns because it makes such soft plush toys - This isn't just for kids, we'd challenge any of you to cuddle one of these and want to give it back!!

As always we want to bring you free patterns where we can, and we'd like to think we've found some pretty awesome ones...

We recently discovered Catknit_ on Instagram who works a lot with Chenille Yarn and creates her own patterns too. You'll find a whole array of beautiful amigurumi patterns on her website, a lot of which are free to use. If you are a Disney fan, you'll LOVE this website. (And that Winnie the Pooh vibe we mentioned earlier? Turns out it IS the perfect shade - you can see that pattern on her Instagram) Check out more of her patterns by going to her Instagram linked below in the image.

As always we'd love to see your work - especially if you've used this yarn before, we'd love to hear about your experience - Happy Yarn Crafting!
