Double Knit Yarn

Double knit is such a well-known and well-loved weight of yarn that it can be found everywhere. It is probably the one that you learnt to knit or crochet with.

It is a staple yarn that is perfect for any kind of craft, and everyone has some lurking in their stash. One interesting fact about double knitting yarn is where it gets its name. What we now call fine or sport weight yarn used to be the norm and was just called knitting yarn back in the day. When a new weight came out that doubled the number of strands in the spin (known as ply), it started to be called double knitting yarn and the name has stuck!

It can also be referred to as DK yarn, or light worsted weight and is generally worked up on between 3.75mm or 4.5mm needles or hooks (US 5 - 7). In the yarn weight family it is a 3, or lightweight yarn. Even though it is on the finer end of the range it still has a soft, bouncy spin that makes it super versatile and easy to work up quick projects and cosy garments.

It's best to check the ball band for the yarn you choose as it does vary, but generally the number of stitches per inch in stockinette is 5 or 5 1/2. It really can be used to make anything from fine scarves, hats and gloves, to warm sweaters, blankets or homewares. It can also be used for children's clothes, toys or crafts. The list is endless with this light to medium weight yarn, which is why it comes in such a delightful range of colours, textures, fibres and ball sizes.

We have a fantastic range of yarns in our collection, from marble effect variegated yarns by Cygnet, textured cotton mixes by YarnArt and big cakes by Stylecraft. Be inspired by the range of bright colours available to make your own statement cardigan or jumper, then fall in love with the ease of self-striping yarn or gradual colour blends for scarves and shawls.

All our yarns are specially chosen to be sumptuously soft, with beautiful drape and stitch definition. They are easy to work up and easy to care for after, most are washable at 30 while some are even washable at 40 making them ideal for children's clothes or toys.
